The Galactic Senate: polls & voting for May 2002

Nothing gladdens our heart more than to see democracy in action in the science fiction and fantasy world. If you feel the same, dear user, then here's our current and past online polls, as voted for by many a fine fellow (you too can vote, but choose wisely) ...

Intellectual Stimulation or Adventure?

Well, we've all hit the 21st Century together, and science fiction & fantasy seem to be heading on for more of the same old, same old. We've got Middle Earth, vampire movies, Star Trek and Star Wars. Just like the 1960s. Just like the 70s and 80s. So does today's sophisticated audience want intellectual stimulation or simple dumbed-down adventure from their Science Fiction & Fantasy? Against the backdrop of an excellent series like ‘Andromeda’ being made simpler for its audience, just what the heck do we want from our SFF?

Food for the brain. Some of the greatest works of science fiction have fed the brain, as well as the entertainment buds. Take Bladerunner on the big screen, or Rendevous with Rama in the printed word - or even weird stuff like Twin Peaks. Dumbing down SF/F - whatever the media - is just going to cause the audience to migrate to fresher fields and abandon SF/F altogether

TV dinner-fare, please. Hey, dumb sells. Bring on Buffy The Vampire Slayer (the more buff, the better), and when you've finished with that, I'd like all the plot and characterisation surgically removed from Farscape. As for fiction, forget publishing any new authors who just write & stuff - can't you do some more new books ghost-written by supermodels, politicians or Hollywood stars? Failing that, how about some more Star Wars and Trek share-crops?
