This hot sunny summer, we came 75,000 miles away from a 'Deep Impact' moment, when an asteroid the size of a football pitch made one of the closest ever recorded approaches to the Earth. Our science can manipulate DNA & probe the surface of Mars, but we didn't spot that puppy until two days after the rock missed us. So this month, we ask, 'do we have our priorities right?'. Is there much point in the rich nations spending billions on tanks, missiles and armies when the real enemy - the cold and indifferent cosmology of the universe - might, tomorrow, send humanity the way of the Silvisaurus?

Spend the money at home. Humanity got by fine the last three thousand years without an asteroid & comet deflection shield. There's plenty of starving families in the third world for whom advanced science would be a fresh water supply, basic medical care and three squares a day. .

Spend the money on detection and deflection. For the first time in human history, mankind has at its disposal the means to preserve the Earth from an Extinciton Level Event. Let's seize that chance. The cosmos has been kind enough to fire a couple of warning shots across our bows, the next one might just land on our heads. Chicken Little we ain't.
