I have to confess to not seeing the earlier edition but bearing in mind author Pohl's travelogue of America, I suspect it really caters more to his home market than to other parts of the world and wasn't distributed over here.
That's not to say he hasn't visited and enjoyed the sites and museums outside the USA in his travels, even in UK gets a favourable mention, but more to so with just who the readership is likely to be. It shouldn't need any introduction as to who Frederick Pohl is although this is only the second non-fiction book he's written.
This book examines his love of science and his desire to see it up close by either visiting observatories off the beaten track to visiting museums, conventions and lecture theatres. For each chapter of this book, there's a certain amount of basic science and explanation as well as where to go for first hand experience.
Although the intro points out that the openness of some places is likely to be more restricted since 9/11, Pohl doesn't think this should restrict if you have a desire for knowledge. This is very much a layman's book but should provide some interest to any who want to read it.
The subject range is sufficient with turning out odd bits of info for anyone to discover something they hadn't dwelt on before. Throughout, Pohl demonstrates his own love of science and should be able to draw you in sufficiently to explore beyond this book.
If you're a neo-writer, this is also a reasonable source book to have in your research collection wherever you are in the world.
I can well see people using this book as a guide to look around the most interesting places in the world and put some feet back inside museums that are probably just around the corner from where they live and that can't be a bad thing.
