Simon Malmain Guardian of Magic is in pursuit of a rogue mage. Simon helps police his fellow mages to ensure they do not abuse their powers. The year is 1748 and Simon's pursuit of Lord Drayton leads him into an elaborate trap. Drayton turns him into a unicorn and intends to kill Simon and harvest the unbelievable power of the unicorn's horn. Luckily, Simon uses his physical power to escape but he cannot regain his human form.
When Drayton is called away, his servant unwittingly uses the only virgin in the castle, simple maid Mad Meggie, to lure the unicorn back. But Meggie finds herself drawn the idea of escape and rides the unicorn away from the captors.
When Simon comes to his senses, he finds that Meggie is under a powerful enchantment. As soon as her true nature is revealed, they discover she has the potential to be a powerful mage and could become a Guardian herself. Simon is also strongly attracted to her although he's unsure initially whether it is his 'animal' nature.
Meg remembers nothing of her family but agrees to put her search on hold as she joins forces with Simon and attempt to find out what Lord Drayton's plans truly are. As they fight their powerful physical attraction, the couple agree to a sham marriage to placate society's morals. Being together is difficult but with Simon still liable to change back to a unicorn if he gets angry, he need's Meg's virgin blood to transform him back. Keeping Meg a virgin may be the hardest task of all.
The plot owes a lot to the author's previous romance novels but manages to mix up a goodly amount of magic and plenty of characters and events. As well as magic, it also includes references to the industrial revolution and mechanisation.
'Stolen Magic' is overall more of a fantasy than a romance novel but it doesn't entirely leave its roots behind. The relationship between the main characters fits in well with the theme and my only irritation is when it occasionally lapses into the regrettable embarrassing clichés of describing sex and passion that make it sound too much like a bodice-ripper. Those lapses aside, it has a solid body of central characters with the historical backdrop it is an engaging and fun read.
