You've no doubt seen GNP Crescendo's ads in 'Starlog' for a long time now and this first volume of Neil Norman's 'Greatest Science Fiction Hits' came out in 1986. When we were offered the latest volume recently, I said that we hadn't even seen the early editions and they kindly sent the lot.

I have to confess that given the choice, I would go for an original sound recording. Indeed, so do Crescendo - which we've plugged in the past including 'Seven Days' and 'Farscape' - but this album collection started in days when such albums, on vinyl no less, were either few on the ground or cover versions that entered the record charts.

Oddly enough, for the majority of the tracks here from SF TV and film, these are very much traditional interpretations of either theme music or recognisable tracks that were used. It's only the odd surprise that tend to spin away from this. 'Star Wars' lacks the trumpet fanfare. '2001's 'Also Spake Zarathustra' has an extended funk at the end considering the opening is 90 seconds long to make it last double the length. Considering that most of these tracks are really between 90 and 180 seconds long, it was probably to prevent any track looking too short changed or bring the overall time up.

Obviously, all tracks used here were only around up to 1986, so its hardly surprising that you'd have the themes from the two above, plus 'CE3K', 'Superman', 'Alien' and even 'Moonracker' and Disney's 'The Black Hole'. From TV, the range is from 'Star Trek', 'Outer Limits', 'One Step Beyond' and the original 'Battlestar Galactica'. Essentially, tracks for everyone than for specific causes.

All of it is an interesting mix and if nothing else, makes for some pleasant background music while you're typing at your computer.
