I went into reading this book 'Deem' with expectation. After all, it's supposed to be about a city where underground religions are surfacing, rebelling against some alien gift and an oddball character called Orlando Mott investigating a suspect against all of this called Spright Mass. The blurb on the back of this book outlines this but unfortunately does not take into account that the author is actually writing intense character studies, making this plot so hidden that you end up not knowing what is going on or even care that much in the end.
This isn't to say that 'Deem' isn't readable. I surprised myself by how quickly I read and not scanned it. The prose is readable, but not from the aspect of working out the plot. I've still no idea what the talking frogs are about or one character's passion for collecting plastic eyes.
Undoubtedly, there must be readers out there who like character-driven material, but this verges on fantasy more than Science Fiction and is unlikely to be everyone's kind of story, so take that into account if you choose this book.
