Yes, it's another spoof of a national institution. Those of you suffering from PDT (Pre-Doctor Time), the limbo that is the TV schedules without the delicious David Tennant, may be tempted to read this. Curiously, my first thought was that the character was Paul McGann but that's another story.
As you can see by the cover, you are getting two spoofs for the price of one in this book. Not only does the Doctor take a hit but Lynne Truss, famed for the book 'Eats, Shoots And Leaves', gets it between the eyes as well.
The story, if you think it is relevant, opens with the Doctor getting shot by an ET. I think you know where this is going. The ET is rather annoyed that the Doctor travels through time clearing temporal apostrophes.
After this, the tale moves back through time, then forwards a bit and then sideways. There is a vast cast of characters including the Cydermen, flying Garlecks and a megalomaniac Greek called Stavros. As I said, I think you can see where this is going...as long as you can look round corners.
I confess it took me a while to see where it was going due to only getting halfway through 'Eats, Shoots And Leaves' before deciding life was too short for worrying where my grocer apostrophised. I found this book much more amenable and quite, quite bonkers. In much the same way as the Truss book this is 'supported' by its genuine devotion to the power of the written word. It loves what it sends up and of course relies heavily on us all getting the joke. I am concerned that Mr Roberts needs to get out more and stop writing this loony books but I'm sure it makes his bank happy and that makes me happy, too.
If someone buys this for you at Giftmas, you know you are the family anorak. Now all join me in a chorus of 'Ooh aah' from the Cydermen.
