Described as '... an illustrated roadmap to the dark and fantastic worlds of this award-wining, best-selling British author', this weighty volume delves in great detail into the mind and works of Brian Lumley.
My first encounter with the author was my discovery of 'Necroscope' in 1990. I enjoyed the story greatly, so much that I began collecting the series, even though there was something about Lumley's style I found off-putting. As I now discover from this book, it's the Lovecraft heritage showing through. Lumley is one of the classic contributors to the Lovecraft Mythos.
Personally, I can't stand Lovecraft. Any enjoyment I might have obtallection 'The Caller Of The Black', being published in 1971. Since then, he's gone from strength to strength, with hundreds of short stories and books, not to mention poetry (no, he said NOT to mention the poetry!) published around the world.
The book comprises a humorous introduction and chronology of important events, several in-depth examinations of Lumley's works, a delightfully personal and amusing interview and another with the cover artist Bob Eggleton, bibliographies of the works. Most helpfully, a series of concordances for all the major works: the 'Necroscope', 'Psychomech Trilogy', 'Dreamland' and 'Primal Land' series.
'The Brian Lumley Companion' is a well-written, very informative and extremely useful book for anyone who enjoys Lumley's work and an essential resource for the true fan.
