This is a very different DC Universe to the one I remember leaving in the early 1990s. Apart from the more recent 'Infinity Crisis' storyline, the current range of DC super-heroes are far more pro-active in their pursuits in sorting out the mess their world has been left in. No more so than with the network of super-ladies called Birds Of Prey. I was never exactly sure what or which came first with this title, bearing in mind the short-lived TV series of the same name. Barbara Gordon, formerly Bat-Girl and since being disabled by a bullet in her back, now the computer resourceful Oracle can call upon a variety of ladies to fight combat for her. Amongst these are the second Black Canary, Huntress, Big Barda, Gypsy, Lady Blackhawk and a new female Judo Master.
This book covers their recent adventures from attempting to put an end to Black Alice, a formidable magic-absorber who just wants to be left alone to orchestrating a prison break in South America and getting more than a little flak from Spy Smasher, a lady who has the credentials to order an air force attack against them. The pace is nearly all non-stop action. No one seems to be concerned that they don't have a normal life to return to, well except Black Canary but she has different grounds to do this with an adopted daughter. In short, these are all warrior women doing what they see is right. The more cynical me wonders how they can finance such activity themselves but you're not supposed to ask too loudly and let the writer get on with the story. If I have to be critical at all, I think Lady Blackhawk has a somewhat limited future considering all she can do is fly aircraft.
The artwork on the cover doesn't really do justice to the contents which is far more intricate. All three artists blend well together with no jarring between their different styles. A roller-coaster of events that leaves you on the last page wondering what's going to happen next.
