Any comicbook that has Alex Ross' name associated with it tends to raise the game of the other creators involved. With the 'Justice' comicbooks, released in four volume hardbacks, you have such a book. To ensure the book was done on time, artist Doug Braithwaite did the pencils with Alex Ross doing the finishes which meant the inks and colouring. There's a lot of work involved in the production of any comicbook. Laying out the pages detailing the story takes time and then to repeat at the painting stage. By dividing the work it is possible for both artists to have some freshness and spend more time than they would otherwise.

The first four issues of 'Justice' here take on the premise that why with all their super-powers that the Justice League Of America don't do more for the people they are supposed to be protecting. It follows an opening sequence nightmare that all the super-beings on DC Earth have where they are helpless against over-whelming adversity. It has a more profound effect on the super-villains than the heroes. As Lex Luthor points out, the JLA rescues the world and puts things back the way it was. They don't make any difference. In what appears to be an act of generous benevolence, those characters associated with evil are busy in Africa supplying water and healing or re-building the sick. Behind the activity, the JLA satellite computer has been compromised. Aquaman and the Martian Manhunter have been kidnapped and knowing the identities of the other JLA members has meant they have been caught unawares and attacked..

This is a terrific build-up with the realisation that the JLA is in serious trouble this time although one only hopes that the solution does not mean putting the clock back.

For an extra Alex Ross has done pencils of several characters that should have most of you with your jaws dropped.

Titan Books sent me the second two volumes. Alas. this first volume has already sold out but still available in the US or UK edition through the Net if you can't wait. It's bound to get further reprints and a definite requirement for the two that follow.
