The first of Hiroki Endo's sumptuous 'Eden' manga series portrayed a couple of youngsters quarantined in a scientific bunker as a disease swept the world outside, turning people's skin to stone-like cartilage.
Towards the end of that first volume, the story skipped ahead to Elijah, the son of these two youths, twenty years down the line. This second book continues the story of Elijah and his robotic companion, Cherubim, travelling across a ravaged Central America.
In this book, he hooks up with a group of freedom fighters led by Colonel Khan and the robotic girl Sophia, who is in her fifties but with the artificial body of a teen-ager. Elijah, together with two prostitutes, get caught up in the rebels fight against the paramilitary Propater government. 'Propator' means God in Latin and the biblical references crop up often but aren't heavy-handed.
After some careful build-up, the volume leads to a dramatic and bloody climax as the rebels take on Propater. The augmented abilities of Sophia and the cyborg on the other side of the conflict are exciting and innovative and the writing and artwork creates a unique feel to the combat.
The fight scenes are often grisly and there's a lot of mature content but it doesn't feel gratuitous. The dialogue is snappy and the characters diverse, with just the right amount of mystery to want to read on.
Both the writing and artwork resemble classic Japanese Anime like 'Akira', 'Neon Genesis Evangelion' and 'Ghost In The Shell' but Endo has also carved out his own niche. 'Eden' is post-apocalyptic fiction at its best and Science Fiction and comic book fans should pay attention to this thoughtful, gritty work now it's available here.
