Fireworks for Andromeda and Mutant X 28/04/2004 . Source: Jessica Martin
The Andromeda and Mutant X TV series get zapped as their Production Firm dies. Things aren't looking too good for the Mutant X and Andromeda TV series as their Canadian production company, Fireworks, is being shut and sold off by CanWest Global Communications (Fireworks' parent group).
While a new buyer - if one can be found - might be interested in keeping the two science fiction series alive, the losses at Fireworks have mounted as the market for action-oriented programming has fallen through the floor.
One potential white knight that has been tipped as a rescuer is the SCIFI Channel, now emboldened by their success with Battlestar Galactica and the like ... although informed comment has it that Andromeda and Mutant X might be a bit too rich for their pocket as a solo production.
Mutant X ran into lots of problems from Marvel, unhappy with the X-Men-like storylines of the series.
CanWest said:
"CanWest Global Communications Corp. today reported that an internal review of Fireworks Entertainment, the Company's program production and international distribution operation, has been completed. This review was initiated in response to continued and persistent weakness in demand for North American content in international markets. Given the current state of international film and television markets, and the likelihood of a prolonged downturn in those markets for Fireworks' product, Fireworks will no longer produce or acquire any new television programs. Fireworks will continue its distribution activities, pending the outcome of an ongoing divestiture process."
Bye Bye Dillon and Mutant X Team. It was sweet while it lasted.
