short fiction: SURVIVAL OF THE DIVERGENCE
a SF story by: GF WILLMETTS

Introduction

If ever there was a God who thought this was Purgatory, then I'll kill the next Preacher who declares such things at one of their Ceremonies. Ceremonious bullshit!

Well, if I want to live, I'd do it after the Ceremony when everyone is sleeping if I want to live to carry on with my mission. I might be formidable, but even I couldn't stand against a berserker mob of Braws who thrive on the Preachers' gospel.

My designate is Blard. I'm a Cross, possessing characteristics of both Intel and Braw. We're regarded as the ideal divergence sub-breed for this kind of undercover work. The Braws and the Preachers regard us as inferior to the purity of either Braw or Intel. Odd, really, as we had a common baseline ancestry.

Prejudice must be genetic, or my divergent brothers are too susceptible to indoctrination. I wasn't a bred cross-match, just one of another divergence sub-breeds sharing a genetic heritage as the helix tries out all possible combinations to ensure Mankind's survival.

We are all survivors in one form or another. At least as I've been taught. That and living long enough to pass my genetic helix to the next generation. We're the results of a bio-bomb. Whether it was released by a madman or just got spread like an accidental disease we don't know.

History, like time, becomes immaterial the longer it passes. It's only the results that really count. It killed off over seventy per cent of the human race in less than a generation. Like a match flame building up on a piece of paper.
