Blair
Witch II. Please God. No.
In a triumph
of money over good sense, the team behind Blair Witch - surely one
of the worst, most over-hyped films of 1999 - are now looking to
cash in on their success with both a sequel and a prequel.
The original
dummy documentary about a group of film students who are hunted
down in a Maryland forest by supernatural forces was - IMHO - a
mistake that should have never happened.
But now the
second movie - entitled in a blaze of imagination - Blair Witch
2, should now press ahead under the leadership of Joe Berlinger,
whose credits include the movie Brother's Keeper.
Eduardo Sanchez
and Daniel Myrick - the lucky bastards who found success with their
art school dog droppings the first time around - will be acting
as consultants on the second movie, and have agreed to direct and
produce the third movie all on their own.
The cost to
movie company Artisan of getting the boys to rehash the Blair Witch
thing, is allowing them to greenlight another of their pet projects,
a comedy called Heart of Love.
Production
on the next cash cow is scheduled to start in February, for an all
too predictable Halloween 2000 release.
The 3rd movie
(the prequel, we think) is to start shooting this winter with a
release date in 2001.
Both movies
have sucked up a budget of ten million, which rather begs the question
of Why? The first film only took $40,000(ish) to make, and the shaky
vid-cam concept was obviously the only thing that put a booster
under the original Blair Witch.
Those who mistook
this as originality have obviously not been exposed to a series
of British TV series where members of the public are invited to
send in their home camcorder movies for the privilege of winning
a tenner if they are shown.
If Blair Witch
had been shown alongside videos of juggling dogs and babies falling
over, it would have raised not an eyebrow, we suspect.
So could we
see some Industrial Light & Magic FX in the next movies? Surely
even Hollywood wouldn't be stupid enough to give the Big Budget
treatment to Blair Witch?
We have a couple
of words to say. Dr Who the Movie.
