The
idea for the anthology ‘Witpunk’ arose from a question on an e-forum:
'When did reading SF/fantasy stop being fun?'
Now, since we are on a SF/fantasy site, I can safely say that we
know the joys of reading Science Fiction and fantasy but the editors
of ‘Witpunk’ decided to compile a collection of short stories that
was fun to read - be it fun in a surrealistic, satirical or farcical
way.
Does
‘Witpunk’ live up to the stated aims of the co-editors Claude Lalumiere
and Marty Halpern? Is this a fun book? Depends on what you classify
as fun and why you read Science Fiction.
There a few occasions when reading this book I laughed out loud.
‘Savage Breasts’ and ‘Encounter of Another Kind’ are two funny ha-ha
stories.
There are funny peculiar stories - that stop and make you think
about the world you are living in. ‘The Light of Armageddon’ is
a good example of this.
Yet, I didn't warm to this book at all. There were a few gems,
like the ones I mentioned above but overall the stories didn't shine.
I felt that these stories were picked for a purpose: to prove
a point or to settle a personal score.
Like the drunk in the pub who won't shut up, I feel that this
book is best avoided.
