One of my many conversations with then-editor at Paper Tiger Paul Barnett was why so many of the artists used in the Paper Tiger imprint were American.

Apart from the larger Stateside audience it’s also become of their ready availability and being able to see so much of their art on book covers, not to mention the better sales figures.

Transitions: The Art Of Todd Lockwood with text by Karen Haber and Todd Lockwood

I don’t think it was meant to demean us British fantasy art lovers, just that there’s a damn sight more of them across the pond than in the UK.

If there were more artists of the calibre of Todd Lockwood then I wouldn’t be so unhappy that we see so little British artists in art books. Lockwood is a very versatile artist showing he is as happy in pencil and ink as he is with acrylics or oils.

If you’re into role-playing games then you’ve probably seen a lot of his art already as he has done extensive work for TSR. Work and designs from this alone will keep you goggled for a long while. As to the rest of us, there’s everything from humour, satellite dishes - a great way to get a pay cheque but not to develop creativity - to dragons, fantasy and horror figures.

He then surprises you and drops in the odd SF picture. Simply put, this is a glorious book to browse through and shows off a very capable artist. Don’t browse. Buy. I think you’ll be in love with this book.
